I went on a course a while ago to become an hgv driving instructor. I like to teach people how to drive hgv trucks as it not only teaches them to drive but can also lead them on to a career in maybe deliveries or the like.
I teach them how to become a better hgv driver with a lot of defensive driver training that i put in to each lesson that can prevent the causes of accidents. We do intensive courses that for a fee you can be trained in a week and we have very high pass rates or the drivers can pay just for a lesson a week. With my instruction all that i ask is for them to listen carefully in order to learn properly or they will not pass my course.
Defensive driving to some people sounds very daunting but it's not daunting at all as all that it is, is showing how to prevent an accident by quickening your stopping times and getting you to have better control of your car.As a hgv driver they have to learn more then they would if they were driving a car purely because of the size of the vehicle that they are going to be driving. I start off by giving instruction in the morning as to what i am expecting them to achieve in the days driving, then for the afternoon it is all practical work where i take them out and allow them to drive round different obstacles and put them through little tests.
As an hgv driver i believe that defensive driving is a must. It enables you better control of what hazards you may encounter while out driving in the real world. I t is not made to be a scary lesson but it is made to prepare the driver for the worst. Little instruction can go a long way if the person is willing to learn. I myself went through the defensive driving but the type i teach is the same as what i learned with a lot of added extras thrown in for a better lesson.
