I was one of those boys growing up who you would think that their bmx bike was an extension of themselves, I never went anywhere without my bike. When I was growing up the local people round where we lived were trying to bring the community spirit back into the community it has gone ever since some of the older boys had set fire to the community hall, now instead of the community hall was a playground and a basket ball court. The elders had decided that they would enroll the help of the local lads and get them to help build a bmx course on the waste area by the playground, all us lads thought it was a great idea and many days over the whole school holidays myself and my mates would help move earth and dirt and get the mounds right for all the jumps.
It was finally finished just a few days before we had to return to school it looked great and even the local newspaper was there doing a story about how to bring a community together and it took a picture of all us kids and the adults standing on the bmx course, us with our bikes and shovels and the adults just with shovels.
I had one more summer of fun on the bmx course after that and then I would be leaving school and their would be no more school holidays for me to do as I pleased, this time next year I would be working, what a horrible thought.
About a week before we were leaving school for good I turned 16 and for my 16th birthday my parents had booked me driving lessons with driving school uk, it was a driving school that a guy from our estate used to own, a friend of my dads so he got them at a cheaper rate, anyway where was I oh yes a week before we broke up, well I was on the bmx course as usual one night after school and to this day I still can't tell you what happened but all I can remember is waking up on the ground with my leg round the wrong way and my bone sticking out of my leg.
My friend ran to the nearest house which happened to be the guy who owned driving school uk, luckily he was in and not out taking someone on a driving lesson, my friend told him to ring an ambulance and once he did he came rushing over, the ambulance turned up and he told them that he was a driving instructor and the owner of driving school uk when they asked if he knew me and what had happened, he said he knew me and my dad but didn't know what happened, there was no other bike around so I didn't have a crash with someone, they think what must of happened is I hit a stone or something which made me fly off my bike.
I could tell from their faces that the damage to my leg was serious and the owner of driving school uk said to me as they were putting me in the back of the ambulance that he thinks he better cancel my lessons for the next few months as by the looks of it I was going to be off my feet for that long at least.
Great I thought to myself not only had I ruined my plans to learn to drive over the summer holidays but I had also just lost my last ever summer holidays riding my bmx on the bmx course, how stupid could I of been.
