Choosing to be an authorized driving instructor can become a rewarding career if you can pass the driving instructor test that is also given. An aspiring driving instructor must first seek to be trained and must take driving instructor courses. Like applying for a driver's license there are certain requirements that an instructor must first equip himself with. First he should have a full UK or European Union / European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence, held for at least four years; and one have not been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years before you train. The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet) and to be a 'fit and proper' person, in the opinion of the DSA. These are some of the things one should look after before they can apply for one.
There are some driving instructor courses that are provided for by some driving schools. The instruction given is a bit modified to suit and train you to become an authorized instructor. All need to do is to at least prepare about 6-12 months to complete the course. That is before you go and apply formally with DSA.
Driving instructor courses are basically chopped into three parts. Part I is the theory training. This part is usually the easiest part since this part would entail a lot of mental and theories that one should master by heart. One should master the theory because part of the test are theoretical test. The second part is the Practical test. This part is one of the most interesting part of the training since you will again be given lots of training to various techniques. At this point in time, you are given the initial 40 hours so you can practice teaching and train to become a good trainer yourself. It is at this level the your teaching skills will be tested if your can indeed teach a learner.
After taking driving instructor courses and you have passed the ADI tests, one should be aware that to improve your proficiency as an ADI you are required to attend to CPD or Continuing Professional Development training. These courses will keep your skills in top shape and will be able to make your career a much more robust one. The CPDs are given to those that passed the exams already and are from time to time given test to see if they have absorbed their additional training they get from the training.
